The self-hosted alternative to Atlassian AI

Atlassian Intelligence and Rovo are cloud-only. If your team needs AI for Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket without sending data to the cloud, Foxbridge is built for you.

Atlassian's AI landscape: Intelligence vs Rovo vs alternatives

Atlassian offers two tiers of AI. Atlassian Intelligence is a set of built-in AI features included at no extra cost with Cloud Premium and Enterprise plans — natural language to JQL, AI-generated summaries, smart editing suggestions, and basic question answering. Rovo is a separate paid product at $20/user/month that provides a dedicated AI assistant with deeper search, custom AI agents, and knowledge discovery across Jira and Confluence.

Both share the same fundamental constraint: they are cloud-only and process your data on Atlassian's servers. There is no self-hosted option, no Data Center support for Atlassian Intelligence (and only limited DC support for Rovo via application tunnels), and no way to choose which AI model processes your data.

For teams where these constraints don't matter — Cloud-only organizations with no data residency requirements — Atlassian's built-in AI is the easiest path. Start with the free Intelligence features and upgrade to Rovo if you need more.

For everyone else, there's a gap in Atlassian's offering that third-party alternatives fill.

What Foxbridge does differently

Foxbridge is a self-hosted AI assistant that bridges the gap between what Atlassian offers and what many organizations actually need. Here's how it differs from Atlassian's built-in options:

Self-hosted by design

Foxbridge runs as a Docker container on your servers. Your Jira tickets, Confluence pages, Bitbucket code, and AI conversations never leave your network. This isn't an option or a toggle — it's the architecture. The container connects to your Atlassian instance over your internal network and sends prompts to the AI provider you configure. No data passes through Foxbridge's servers or Atlassian's cloud.

Works with Data Center

Foxbridge connects to all versions of Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket Data Center using standard REST APIs. No application tunnels, no minimum version requirements, no Cloud organization needed. If your Atlassian instance is reachable over the network, Foxbridge can connect to it. This is the key difference from both Atlassian Intelligence (Cloud-only) and Rovo (DC 11.3+ with tunnels).

You choose the AI

Connect to Anthropic Claude (best for tool use), OpenAI GPT-4o, Azure OpenAI (for existing Microsoft enterprise agreements), or Ollama for fully air-gapped local AI. You bring your own API key, control costs directly, and switch providers with a one-line config change. Atlassian Intelligence and Rovo offer no choice — you use Atlassian's AI or nothing.

Broader coverage

Foxbridge provides 40+ tools across Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Jira Assets — with both read and write capabilities. Atlassian Intelligence offers AI features within each product's UI but with limited cross-product capability. Rovo covers Jira and Confluence but not Bitbucket. Neither includes PII scrubbing or file upload analysis.

When to use which

Use Atlassian Intelligence if you're on Cloud Premium/Enterprise, want free AI features with zero setup, and have no data residency concerns. It's good for individual productivity — summarizing issues, converting natural language to JQL, generating text. Start here and see if it's enough.

Use Rovo if you need deeper AI capabilities than Intelligence provides, want custom AI agents and workflow automation, are fully committed to Atlassian Cloud, and don't have compliance restrictions on cloud-processed data. Rovo is Atlassian's premium AI offering and it's genuinely more capable than Intelligence.

Use Foxbridge if any of these apply: you run Data Center (any version), you have data residency or compliance requirements, you want to choose your AI provider, you need Bitbucket integration or PII scrubbing, or Rovo's per-user pricing doesn't work at your team size. Foxbridge gives you AI capabilities comparable to Rovo while keeping everything on your infrastructure.
